About Our Organization...

The Harmony House Foundation, Inc. is a Nonprofit Organization that is organized exclusively for charitable and educational purposes within the meaning of Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Service Code of 1986 or the corresponding section of any future federal tax code.
We were founded in July 2019 (started in 2017 before our 501(c)(3) status) with the intent to provide relief to those in recovery from substance abuse by providing safe, structured, sober, and affordable living spaces. Individuals in recovery often lack access to safe living spaces where they can continue their recovery efforts, build life skills, and prepare for reintegration into the community. Among other reasons, this often occurs because the individuals lack financial means to live in safe neighborhoods removed from elements that could trigger relapse. The Harmony House Foundation will therefore work with local landlords, local government, and local community members to secure a safe, structured, sober, and affordable shared living spaces for individuals in recovery.
We strive to educate the community and to reduce prejudice & discrimination. The Harmony House Foundation engages in community outreach with the hopes to better educate local community members about: (1) the challenges that individuals in recovery face; and (2) the opportunities that our living spaces can provide to such individuals. In doing so, the Harmony House Foundation aims to reduce the prejudice and discrimination that those in recovery face.
We aim to defend the rights of individuals in recovery and educate the community about such rights. Despite the protection offered under various laws including the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Fair Housing Act, many individuals in recovery unfortunately face significant legal challenges. The Harmony House Foundation will continue to work with all the relevant stakeholders to reduce the tensions and better educate them about the legal rights of those in recovery.
This organization was created to help those in recovery experience a better quality of life, regardless of an individual's means. We strive to keep rent at a reasonable amount as well as provide as a liaison to local resources. We try bringing a higher quality of care to those who are often marginalized and unfortunately often do not get the "privilege" of well-rounded individual care that is easily available to those with unlimited means and resources. We work with our local food bank, developed scholarships to "private insurance only" treatment centers, business partners with local agencies that provide CRS staff to our residents, local mental health agencies, and continue to grow and expand in the ways we can facilitate helping others.
The Harmony House Foundation believes in self-empowerment and has developed a Phase program to help each individual to grow at their own pace. Our vision is to provide sustainable-long term recovery for all residents through purposeful thought and meaningful action. By inviting each resident to be a gladiator in their own story and a philosopher of their own life, our program will help them find their individualized steps to recovery and not just survive life after active addiction-but thrive. Each phase promotes self growth through spirituality as well as independent living skills. We mark milestones by phasing up and taking on a new set of goals and challenges. Along with the phase program, the house manager sits down throughout the week and helps the resident develop personalized goals, we break down all the steps required for each goal, resources that will help the resident obtain their goal, as well as provide professional & emotional support throughout the process. Over time a resident can look back and see the foundation they have built for a new life.
Our journey in recovery often comes with bumps in the road. The Harmony House Foundation recognizes that relapse occurs but does not have to be catastrophic. We recognize addiction as a disease and believe just like any disease lapses may occur. We believe the safety of our residents and surrounding community is paramount and every incident is circumstantial however we always try to meet the resident where they are at. We often get residents into crisis, short term treatment, and/or in front of one of our local agencies that can recommend an appropriate level of care. We developed a relapse prevention program that once the resident returns they are automatically enrolled in. If a resident truly wants to recover and has made personal effort & growth, relapse is often the segway needed for long-term recovery. We do not believe in ridiculing, kicking out residents into the streets without any sober support, or alienating somebody who has had a lapse. We believe we can be a demonstration of a healthy, loving community that provides additional resources and support to help that resident. If a resident is resistant to the recommended level of care and/or relapse prevention plan, we will try our best to make sure they are relocated to a safe, secure location: We realize we can only help those who are willing to help themselves. However, more often than not we are able to work with those residents who are struggling by introducing them to various new methods of coping, additional resources such as a CRS, and aftercare treatment from a local agency. Once a resident is on the relapse prevention program they are carefully monitored, receive additional support from the house manager & peers, and drug screened more often. This is to provide safety to themselves, their peers, and community. The Harmony House Foundation has had substantial success working with individuals that have relapsed, many have gone on to work in the field of drug & alcohol.
Overall, we believe all those suffering from the disease of addiction deserve a good quality of life, safe living environment, the opportunity to grow at a pace they are comfortable with, and to move along their journey with the same rights and privileges others are afforded. The Harmony House Foundation not only implements our principles in our policies and program, we advocate our principles to our surrounding community. We are progressive in our thinking, compassionate in our hearts, and understand how diverse and challenging the path to recovery often is.
